Ham Manor Scratch Team have won the Oliver Plate competition at The Dyke Golf Club on Saturday 19th August 2017
The team of Kevin Siveter, Kevin Ruffle, Gary Hector, Richard Rowlands, Ollie Kenning, Charlie Strickland, Paul Bodle and Harry Worner produced a convincing victory by 8.5 – 3.5 versus Copthorne.
On a windy day and with very firm greens and tricky pin positions golf was difficult but the team dug deep to come out on top. The morning foursomes had a pivotal moment. Looking likely we would at best come in down 1.5 – 2.5 Richard Rowlands and Ollie Kenning finished birdie – par to win on the last and level the scores 2-2. Momentum maybe swung towards Ham Manor at that point however during the singles it was looking very tight.
With Charlie losing 3 down and Harry 4 down it looked unlikely we would get any points from those games however Harry would produce the performance of the day to turn his match around and win up the last against George Groves a very good amateur player. Charlie also gained a great half by winning the last 3 holes. Convincing wins from Ollie Kenning and Kevin Ruffle ensured that the match would be decided by Gary Hector, Kevin Siveter and Richard Rowlands. All eventually prevailing to win. Who got the winning point we may never know but with such a convincing scoreline it doesn’t really matter.
It was 13 years since the team last won any silverware of note (happened to be won at the same venue) so it is good to get the club back into the limelight! This achievement maybe one of the best due to the fact that we had to play all of our games away from home. With victories over Lewes, Selsey, West Sussex and Cooden Beach prior to the final the team have travelled very well.
The team would like to thank those that came and supported the team in the final and throughout the many away fixtures. Special thanks goes to the ever present Club Captain Garry Styles and Bill Groombridge.
