The Club House

The square-cut Georgian mansion which affords the club such excellent facilities today was once the home of the Gratwicke family. In the clubhouse there are card rooms and the finest three-table snooker room in Sussex. There is also a table tennis room and indoor bowls are played. There is also an outdoor croquet lawn. The mansion was built in 1822 by Sir William Gratwicke a well-known racehorse owner and trainer. He achieved two Derby successes in 1829 and 1845 with horses called Frederick and Merry Monarch.

Under the trees near the 18th green a simple headstone with the inscription "Frederick 1837" marks the final resting place of William's favorite horse.

It was the building of the canal at the mouth of the River  Arun and the creation of a new harbour at Littlehampton  which finally drained the entire Ham Manor area in the early part of the 19th century, but it was to be another  100 years before it became a golf course.
